PRODUCTION DESIGN CONCEPT: Because the characters and action in Ted and Alice are so intense and abnormal, it was imperative that we made the house look like a house that was simply unfinished, not a butcher shop. I decorated with elements that suggested being trapped – cages, metal, plastic wrap – but nothing that overtly stated, “This is a family of killers.” The element of surprise was an important one for us. In both the restaurant and the house we made certain that nothing looked campy or like a “horror film.” I wanted to give a sense that something was off without screaming it. The set needed to hint at the dark side of these characters without having jars of intestines in yellow liquid lying around.
