PRODUCTION STILLS:

SYNOPSIS: High school senior Will Oberlain sneaks into Salt Lake City’s only gay bar with a bad fake ID. He’s surprised and smitten when he meets an attractive bartender his own age, Eli. Eli invites Will to a clandestine party in the Bonneville Salt Flats. Will offers to drive beginning a strange, haunting and emotionally surprising road trip with his new friend.

PRODUCTION DESIGN CONCEPT: There were multiple large locations on this shoot, many of them night exteriors or dimly lit interiors. The first concern was to make certain the actors and action of the script would be seen. We focused on making big statements over the blank black canvas of night. We shot on 35mm anamorphic, which has a very wide aspect ration, so we had to make certain that our set pieces would fill across the frame while still creating depth and perspective. I transformed a dive bar with a stage into a small town gay bar by sewing and installing a 60-foot long shimmering pride flag. We graffitied over a wall of frosted mirror to give the bar character. The overall concept behind the production design of 2YM was “small town” and homemade – like Utah itself.
